Its bidirectional behavior suits protection paths where transients may occur with either polarity. As a two-terminal SMD device, it is placed across the connection being protected. The free KiCad download contains a two-pin symbol, the two-pad SMB_L4.6-W3.6-LS5.3-BI footprint, and an included 3D model for viewing the package in the board assembly.
