Planes, solder mask & silkscreen
A plane is a layer, or a region of one, flooded solid with copper and dedicated to ground or to a power rail. Planes distribute power with almost no resistance. Their bigger contribution is quieter: every signal’s return current wants to flow directly underneath its trace, and an unbroken ground plane lets it. A solid ground plane under everything prevents more noise problems than any other single layout habit.
That’s also why splits in a plane matter. Route a signal across a gap in the ground plane and its return current has to detour around the gap, forming a loop that both radiates and picks up interference. Four-layer boards are popular largely because they afford an uninterrupted ground plane directly under the signal layers.
Two finishing layers complete the board’s surface. Solder mask is the thin polymer coat, traditionally green, that covers the copper everywhere except the pads. It prevents accidental solder bridges and protects traces from oxidation. Silkscreen is the ink printed on top: reference designators, part outlines, polarity marks, connector labels. Good silkscreen is documentation printed on the product, and you’ll lean on it constantly while debugging.
