A footprint (or land pattern) is the physical counterpart of a schematic symbol: the exact arrangement of copper pads, holes, and outlines that a specific component solders onto. The same schematic resistor might map to a footprint the size of a grain of rice or one big enough to hold, since the symbol carries no package information at all.

Footprints are unforgiving. Pad spacing off by half a millimeter, a mirrored pinout, or a metric-versus-imperial package mix-up (an 0805 inch package and an 0805 metric package are very different sizes) and the real part won’t fit or will connect wrong, discovered only after boards arrive. The datasheet’s recommended land pattern is the authority, and any new or hand-made footprint deserves a print-at-scale check against the physical part.

Every footprint also carries a courtyard, the keep-out area the part needs around it during assembly, plus reference designators (R1, C7, U3) linking each physical part back to the schematic. Footprint hygiene is unglamorous work, but footprint errors are one of the most common reasons a first board revision exists.
