KiCad "Annular width" DRC error: annular ring too small
KiCad design rule check (PCB) message: Annular width (annular_width in kicad-cli reports).
What it means
The annular ring is the copper left around a hole: (pad diameter − drill) ÷ 2. KiCad reports "Annular width" when that ring is smaller than the minimum. Too thin a ring can break out when the drill wanders. Increase the pad or via diameter, or use a smaller drill.
Common causes
- Vias with a large drill in a small pad (for example 0.4 mm drill in a 0.6 mm pad leaves 0.1 mm).
- Footprints drawn with tight pads for small pins.
How to fix it
- Change the via size in Board Setup → Pre-defined Sizes, then use Edit → Edit Track & Via Properties to update existing vias.
- Edit the footprint pads, or pick a footprint variant with larger pads.
Where the setting lives
Board Setup → Design Rules → Constraints → Minimum annular width.
What fabs need
JLCPCB lists 0.15–0.18 mm as an absolute minimum annular ring for plated holes depending on layer count; PCBWay lists 0.15 mm.
Find every “Annular width” on your board
Upload your KiCad project to the free checker. It runs KiCad 10's DRC and ERC with your own rules, shows each finding on the board and links it to its fix. 10 free checks a day, no account.
