A CAN controller needs a transceiver to connect its logic signals to a CAN bus; Microchip's MCP2551-I/SN fills that role. This version uses a surface-mount SOIC-8 package. Its downloadable KiCad set pairs an eight-pin schematic symbol with the SOIC-8_L4.9-W3.9-P1.27-LS6.0-BL footprint, which has eight pads, and includes a 3D model for board viewing. The pin and pad counts give a straightforward check while assigning the device in a design. The conversion has been used by 1 ProtoFlow engineer in real designs.
